This is hike 18 from 100 Classic Hikes in New England.

We parked on the road in Talcott Mountain State Park, just ahead of the closed gate. We hiked the loop counterclockwise up on the Heublein Tower trail (in yellow blaze) and back on the Metacomet trail (in blue blaze).

The trail was well travelled on, snow packed, icy at times, mostly slushy. Bare boots were good enough. The children were wearing Kahtoola MICROspikes.

The hike up had several sections with wide open views:

Picnic tables were available for a quick snack.

The return trip was mostly in dense tree area with many stream crossings:
