Newburyport-Portsmouth Bicycle Loop

28 June 2014

Day Trip Report

With easy access on the train from Boston, this loop combines two bakeries, coastal views, beach stops, & two port towns.

I boarded the Commuter Rail at 09:30 from Boston North Station, arriving Newburyport at 10:31. I purchased tickets while on the train using MBTA mTicket app.

The route starts on a stretch of bicycle trail before reaching route 1A with busy traffic but wide shoulder until the coast. There it is leisurely ride along the coast, cars coming in & out of beach parking, people strolling along the road, & food stops busy serving hungry patrons with greasy food.

It only gets better across the state border into New Hampshire on Ocean Boulevard with twists, turns, & rolling hills overlooking the rocky coast:

Once in Portsmouth, there are plenty of options for food stops to refuel. Ceres Bakery was our choice for some olive bread & cold vegetable soup:

The return trip inland was just as pleasant on quiet country roads via coffee stop in Exeter:

Back in Newburyport for a break before taking boarding the train back to Boston.
